My First Half Marathon

I need to be honest about how much I prepared for this half marathon. I only ran about ten times before the actual race and my longest run was about 5 miles. I was doing several other work out classes like spin three times per week and body pump twice per week. I think that those classes helped me with endurance.  If I had to do this race again, I would have trained harder.

The Austin Half Marathon is notoriously difficult because it’s a very hilly course. I did not run on many hills so this was tough and affected my time.  I finished in over three hours.  I ended up having to walk most of them especially the really big one at mile 12.

For the first ten miles I felt pretty good and then after that I just could not run anymore. It’s like I was out of gas. I was not in any pain. I just could not keep running.  I saw these firefighters running the full marathon in full gear around mile 10 and got the urge to cry.  I didn’t think I could ever do what they were doing.  They definitely inspired me to keep going.

There were so many awesome people who encouraged me to the finish line. I actually was able to run the last half mile.

Although it was a tough race, I really had fun and felt accomplished when I crossed the finish line.  I definitely think this will be the first of many more races. The energy on race day is addicting and running is good for you.

It was a good day for my fitbit. 🙂

It’s about time

I have thought about starting a blog about my crazy life for a very long time but never really had the time. Fourth year of medical school is one of the last times in my life where I will have this much free time and the next few months will be very exciting as I travel all around the country to interview for an internal medicine residency position. I really can’t wait to be a doctor. It has been a long and difficult road, and I am just glad that the finish line is near.

I also want to publicly announce that I am going to start training for a half marathon. I am still in the process of picking out a race. Hopefully, I can find something for late spring so I have enough time to train.  It’s something that I have always wanted to do, and its now or never.  Oh and did I forget to mention I also want to get into shape? Third year of medical school was not easy on my hips. Call days are long, and I definitely packed on some pounds by munching on donuts and indulging on jalapeno poppers in the middle of the night.  It’s ironic how unhealthy hospital food is.  My food posts will include both the healthy and unhealthy foods. What can I say I am fat kid at heart.

Finally, we get to the last topic: love. I am a single woman in my mid to late twenties.  I dated a few different men at this point but have yet to find the right one.  I hope to eventually meet a great guy.  Otherwise, I fear I will die alone.  So on occasion, I will discuss dating here.

I promise the life of a future physician to be is not a boring one . So stay tuned!
